Low Calorie Diet

low calorie dietWhen choosing a diet purely for the sake of losing weight, a good diet to follow is a Low-Calorie Diet. As you might know, the right way how to lose weight fast is all about eating less calories as your daily calorie needs. Therefore low-calorie diets are very effective(probably the most effective of any weight loss diet) when your goal is to lose those fatty extra kilo’s your body carries with you. There are two types of low-calorie diets; The Very-Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) and the normal Low-Calorie Diet. In the next two paragraphs we’ll explain you the differences between the two diets.

Very-Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) – Not Recommended

The VLCD is a diet mostly recommended for obese people and requires you to eat 800 calories or less a day(how many calories does a person burn in a day?), keep in mind that calorie intake always heavily depends on your personal daily calorie needs, so when you are doing heavy exercise every day you need to adjust your calorie intake to a higher amount. The biggest plus-side to the VLCD is that it’s the fastest weight loss diet you can follow. There’s no other diet that will lose you more weight as this diet. But as you probably can imagine, the VLCD is one of the most drastic and hardest diets to follow as well. It’s also the least healthy one of the two. Therefore we do not recommend this diet, only follow the VLCD if you have no other choice left and you really know what you are doing. Another downside to following a VLCD for an extensive period of time is that you risk going into a long “Starvation Mode“, a organ and muscle-burning state you don’t want your body to be in. You will feel tired, worn out and without energy.

Normal Low-Calorie Diet

The “normal” Low-Calorie Diet is a much easier one to follow, plus it’s a lot healthier as well. It requires you to eat between 1500 and 1800 calories a day (again, this is highly variable between each person and depends on your daily calorie intake) and is the most recommended one for the major share of people seeking to lose weight while maintaining a normal well-functioning body every day. Unlike as with the VLCD, most people won’t have much problems following this diet because it’s normally not a huge change in calorie intake compared to the previous diets most people followed. You will still have enough energy to live your normal daily life and you won’t risk going into “Starvation Mode”. The only real downside to this diet compared to the VLCD is that the weight loss rate is lower, meaning you will lose weight more slowly as with the VLCD.

Change Your Lifestyle

As with most diets, if you want to succeed with losing weight with both the VLCD and the normal Low-Calorie Diet it will require you to change your lifestyle. Diets are doomed to fail when you do not take it as serious as you could do. This means you really need to maintain the maximum daily calorie intake allowed, preferably every single day you follow the diet. The best way to succeed with a diet is to not “follow a diet” but to make it your lifestyle. If you can put it in your mind that the diet is part of your normal life you will feel less temptation to eat “bad foods” or give up the diet. Visit the how many calories to lose weight page to learn more about burning calories and losing weight.
